I'm very sorry to hear the bad news. Sometimes, hatchlings just don't make it even with the best care.

I am really, really sorry. Things didn't sound good last night. I hope this doesn't turn you off tortoises completely. My advice is, steer away from very young hatchlings until you have more experience, and either get an adult, or a juvenile. It's very discouraging to lavish care on a baby and have it die.
My sympathies go out to you. I know exactly how you feel.

I am so sorry to hear this. It sounded bad yesterday already, but well,- we still hope.
Try not to blame yourself and get scared off tortoises.
Like somebody else already mentioned,- some babies simply don't make it,- not in captivity and not in the wild. And it is very difficult to assess the health status of a hatchling. If they don't show obvious signs of illness you assume they are fine. But a lot can be wrong, though genetic disposition, problems during incubation or shortly after.
Hope you'll find a new tortoise friend when you are ready for it again,- and yes, a little yearling might be a safer choice.
All the best,
Gaby
So sorry for your lose.. It is sad losing a pet, I lost a frog today too. It sounds like you were a very caring parent and I am sure Herman lived a very good life although it was short.
Good luck
Christina

Oh and a husband
I am so sorry to hear about your little one.
I have two of them myself and although I haven't had them for long I would be devastated if something were to happen to one of them.

So very sorry to learn of the passing. I cannot know how you must feel, but with my Hermann' little "buddy" I have gotten so attached its unreal. Unlike most people, I have not kids and my wife and I got buddy to try a pet out. I'm 50 something and I want Buddy to be around along time. He is 6 months now and past fearful early days. I have a high end (expensive) herp vet here as a backup, but I think about death sometimes and its scary.
God bless you and keep the faith, torts in the wild have a hard time also.
Terry
You have my complete & total sympathy. A few years ago I had a hatchling leopard that sold my heart then failed to thrive. I know how you feel, but please don't get discouraged.
