Diet change to silkies.. will I see a difference in bowels at first?

CrittersMailToo Apr 03, 2004 10:00 AM

Ok, we're raising silks now, but I haven't switched to feeding them full blown yet; I wanted to prepare enough stock to get a colony going before making the switch. I have fed him some a couple of days though, and noticed his poo was a little runny on the consecutive days. Defining runny: still soft poo as the 'base,' but watery around it. To test that it was possibly the diet change, I went back to solid crix (and greens, of course - no change there or in supps), for a couple days after the silks, and his poo went back to normal (moist, but firm, no liquid. I tried silks again this morning, so we'll see what the result is tomorrow morning. Oh, one difference is that the silks weren't dusted like the crix are.

Is this a normal adjustment phase with the diet change? It worried me a bit for obvious reasons, but with it going back to normal when he went back on crix... maybe my worry is premature?

The rest of the answers to what you're wondering... basking area is 110-115, ambient 85-90. He is healthy, wealthy, and wise to the naked eye, gets baths every other day or so.. 3 1/2 months old, don't know his weight, but he has fat pads and is between 12-13" long, active and curious.

We finally have pictures of him, and as soon as I get an editor that will reduce the picture size, I will post some. In the meantime, any feedback?

Thanks,
Denise

This isn't going well... Hope to hear some input from silk feeders.

My guys only eat silkies with the occasional super. Yes they do have more liquid in their poop like what you were describing- it's my understanding its because silkworms have more moisture to them. I don't think it changes and if it does it might be because you lessen the amount of silkworms they eat. I had a week without any silkworms at one time and their poop went back to being more firmer and with less liquid til the silkies were given to them again. I still think I'd rather deal with that than the crickets though.- Just my opinion.

I know from past experience with any animal - mammal, reptile, amphibian, etc. - that runny poo is a sign of a sick animal. It goes against my grain to let that happen, because it doesn't seem like it is a balanced diet that way.

I don't know.. I'll wait to hear more opinions.

Yeah- I'm still a new comer here but just to clarrify- they have more liquid and the poop is softer but the poop itself isn't watery- just the liquid. That sounds so ugly LOL- anyways- definitely hear from others that have more experience- this is just mine

I've had my beardies on silkies for at least 6 months now and there is always an ample amount of liquid around the feces. I believe the beardie will use the water it needs to and expell the rest. I've been leary about this before as well since their urine is supposed to be in the form of urates. I also have a couple of pythons and they also have urates. I didn't realize up until a month or two ago not only do they expel the urates but also expel a good amount of liquid as well.

Sorry you didn't get much of a response here. I just saw the post. You shouldn't be worried about the liquid, it just means you have a well hydrated beardie. Now if the actual feces becomes a runny mess then there's something to worry about.

Good luck!!

I appreciate the feedback, thank you.

On the not getting more feedback... wellllllll, I'm not really surprised; almost every question I have posted since day one has been skipped over by most of the regular posters who consistently offer advice and feedback to others. I'm not griping, just stating facts. I even got an email from one of the posts a month ago telling me that I may as well not expect answers from anyone because I wasn't accepted. Who the heck knows why.. lol

At any rate, I'll keep trudging along; it is still something I will have trouble accepting - it is REALLY solidly ingrained in my head that liquidy is not good! I will add a couple silkies a day and see if I can handle the mental block.. lol

Thanks again, have a good one!
