Introducing our two beardies

mjtrev Apr 03, 2004 10:35 AM

Hello,

We have two beardies- Vino is a 2 year old male, and Dusty is our 7 month old female. I know we should not introduce them into the same housing until the female is older, but how will I know if my male will act aggressivly toward Dusty? Everytime he sees her, he gets very excited bobbing his head and turning black. He also aggressivly runs toward her habitat and climbs the side, acting as if he wants to get in. Is this a normal first response? (Could it be more of a mating response?) When and how should we introduce them safely into the same housing?

Thanks ahead of time for any information you can give me.

Yes, that would be the general reaction for the male. When your female is 18 months old, at over 300 (preferably 400) grams. The male may act aggressive because that is breeding behavior. Also, don't place them together unless you want to have baby dragons. Do a lot of research before breeding your dragons because the babies can be dificult to care for. Bye.

I agree with the above. Better not to indroduce them yet at all. She is way to young to be subjected to that agressive breeding behavior.

Also, it's better for them to be housed seperately all the time. The male will stress out the female constantly if you make them live together, she is way better off without that stress. And you will have babies, lots and lots and lots of babies. That's a huge responsibility. It's better for everyone involved for them to each get their own enclosure, and for you to have constant control over when and how they interact.
