Looking for breeding info for Tx Rat snakes

HerpHandler Apr 03, 2004 10:50 AM

I am used to breeding corn snakes, ball pythons, red eyed tree frogs and a host of other reptiles. This year I would like to attempt to breed my Luecistic Tx rat snakes. Could someone point me to a care sheet, or tell me the basic info such as. aproximate time from copulation until egg laying, then from egg laying to hatch and at what temps to incubate at.

Hello. I can give you what works for me. I’m sure there are other valid points and methods as well. It really is pretty much the same as your corns. I typically brumate my animals early, beginning in late October to the first week of November. Brumation temps are between 50-55 degrees F. This lasts until around the first week in Feb. when I begin to warm them back up. This year the post brumation shed occurred around two weeks after my female was out. At this time I introduced her to the male. Although I never actually witnessed copulation, the male did show interest. It is hard to give a length of time from copulation to egg deposition. Without really knowing when they copulate, plus having numerous copulations, I’m not sure if there is a positive way to tell without just having them meet one time. My female was first introduced to my male for the first time this year a month and a half before she laid her eggs, so I would guess maybe in the 4-5 week range. The female will typically shed around two weeks before the eggs are laid, give or take a day or two. I incubate most of my colubrid eggs at 78-80 degrees F. I use a vermiculite/perilite mixture that seems to work well. Eggs usually begin to hatch between 50-60 days after deposition. I hope this helped some. Take care!

my notes differ from jeremy's only in that my [normal] texas rat eggs take 70 days to hatch almost exactly every year......i'm located in extreme s.east pa. [jersey/delaware border] and all my colubrid eggs take approx. this long as compared to other breeders located in warmer climes i've noticed...........
