Gravid female eating habits question

RedQuake Apr 03, 2004 12:10 PM

A female once bred will produce clutches of two eggs every two weeks and she stops eating before she lays....so if she lays two eggs, should she start eating alot again or do they use their entire reserve until they are done laying?

Thanks,
Red

I haven't experienced that. Mine usually lay, then 4-6 weeks later will lay again. And in between they eat everything in sight! Lol.

Mine usually do stop eating shortly before laying. They then after laying will eat as the other post said "everything in sight" for a day or two and then stop again. The closest together mine have laid has been about two weeks, but can be longer.

Like the other posters said, most times it does take a bit longer than two weeks between clutches. What I’ve noticed is that the female will shed her skin, and a day or two after that lay her eggs. She should be good and hungry after she lays, so keep plenty of dusted mealies or crix around. A pinky mouse would also be a good thing to offer a gravid female between clutches. Hope this helps!

Thankyou I was actually wondering about pinkies...

The thing is that Flame laid her clutch of two eggs on Mar 24th and since then she has eaten very little. A few superworms. She hasn't ever been to keen on mealworms but when i first got her and offered superworms, she would come and grab them before i could even get them into her bowl. I'm just a bit curious as to why she wouldn't be chowing down if infact she is still gravid. Then again if she isn't and she's done laying, would it be ok for her to only be eating a bit? I had expected that even if she was done laying she would still increase her food intake to regain her reserves.

Thanks for you help

Glad as always to help Red. There is no simple answer to your question about eating and putting back on the pounds (well ounces in this case).

I’ve had a few girls who really lost their appetite wile laying eggs, and used up a lot of their fat reserves while gravid. Also I had girls who continued to eat like little pigs and lost only little weight. Some would gain all their weight right back after they stopped laying eggs, other would take some time.

As long as she isn’t overly skinny, and is still eating I wouldn’t worry much. Keep food available, and I’m sure she will eat when she’s hungry.

Thanks again its good to know that their habits aren't always the same. She is by no means skinny....she was large to begin with and then beefed up alot before laying. I'll keep a very close eye on her and watch for any trouble
