Turtle Newbie

I am interested in starting a RES tank. I have a 40 Breeder that I was planning on using for two of them. Is this enough room? (the dimesions are 36"x18"x16"Also, what kind of lighting requirements do I need? I'm assuming I'll need a basking lamp of some sort and a flourescent light for UVB rays. Can I use a regular florescent light or do I need a full spectrum light? I need a submersible hearter as well. Do i need a cover for it so the turtles don't burn themselves? Do turtles need a substrate? Some of the pictures on websites I've been looking at just show a bare tank. Other things I've read say they need about the same amount of gravel as a fish tank. How much matinence is a turtle tank? Is it like a fish tank changing 20% of the water every 2-4 weeks? I read something that said you should change 25%-50% every week. Thanks for the help.

The 40 gallon breeder is ok for hatchlings, but as adults they would need something much larger, at least 100 gallons or more. You need a UVB full spectrum flourescent tube and a basking light. Gravel isn't really recommended because the turtles can eat it and get impacted. I use river rocks and slate in my tank, but bare tanks are fine too. The water changing depends on your filter and how well it works. I only do water changes twice a year. I have a really nice canister filter on my tank.
