spring peepers in the snow...

ginevive Apr 03, 2004 02:21 PM

Last night we got an odd late snowfall (well then again, here in Arctic NY state, that's not entirely odd.) I could hear the spring peepers in the woods, calling, as it was snowing! These frogs must be pretty resilient to chilly 35-degree temperatures.

Amphibians are amazing. I have observed P crucifer calling with an air temp of 34 F. That's spectacular when you consider that advertisement calling is one of the most energy consuming activities of any vertebrate! (Stebbins and Cohen) It must be even harder when it's cold!

Wow, that is fascinating. it had to be around 32 degrees F when we heard them. but tonight we have snow (a light glazing on tree branches) and I'm wondering if they will be out tonight; I plan on checking when I get home.
