Help! Eggs keep breaking.

Ecko Apr 03, 2004 03:02 PM

Can hard water cause problems with salamander eggs and larvae? I found several clumps of them in the mud puddles in my driveway two weeks ago. All but twelve have died from either infection(about a fourth of them were dead when I found them and infection spread fast), or the eggs have gotten so fragile that they break when I try to change the water. I've been using well water(no chlorine added, but its very hard), with a bubblestone. They are in a half gallon tank in about two inches of water. The first one hatched today, but the others are still much smaller and don't look as heathly. This is the first time I have tried to raise amphibians and any help would be appreciated.

I don't think that the bubblestone is necessary, but partial water changes are. I've successfully raised up tiger larvae using this method. Not sure about well water either. Possibly, others can help with that.

Forgot to add that when you do partial water changes all that you really need is a small siphon. This can empty out as well as refill the enclosure that they're in with very little stress on the eggs. Not sure if you're doing it this way or not, just trying to help out. Good luck.
