Hey,

I recently collected a few adult bluespots. Three of them are gravid females and 3 more of them are males. Right now they are in a 55 gallon tank with about 4-6in of water and a little bit of dry land. There are sticks and leaves in the water. I noticed tons of single eggs where the adults were collected so I know they are ready to breed. I have a rain system set up in the tank. What should I do to get these guys to start breeding.

Mike

PLEASE let the adults go. Collect some eggs, raise them from young, and then in a few years breed those. Taking adults, especially a gravid female, can be harmful to the population.

The two people that I went with are from the US fish and wildlife and the IDNR. They both estimate the population at 450 strong. This population is hidden and has showed no sign of stress. I asked them specifically if this would harm the population and they said that the population is too big to be harmed by the taking of 2 or 3 females. This site is currently a candidate for a INHS survey.

I still think taking gravid females and adult males from the population is irresponsible. Please, I urge you to release them and work with larvae.
