Hey everyone, I was just doing a routine feeding/watering when I noticed that my female het blizz looked really bad. She was on a wooden rack with 10 other leos and none show these symptomes. I know she's not going to make it but I am wondering what could be wrong.... Here are some symptoms:

Gaping when she has to breathe which is only when you touch her
Yellowish mass in stomach area
She was in a part shed at the time
Temps are good
All leos around her were fine
Her tail was badly shrunked and red for the lower 1/2
Her eyes were sunken into her head but she could kinda see
Skull looked flat
2-3 days befor she was eating good and running around

I also noticed that one of my hypos which was next to her bin, was eating really well but his tail size was decreasing and the lower 1/2 looked dry but in good condition. What is happening? I recently added a new gecko to my collection and he hasn't eaten in a while. He was placed four rack slots down from all my leos for quarantine, could he be the coulprit?

Here are some pics of the female

How "routine" are your waterings and feedings if you just noticed that gecko looking like that. A gecko doesn't get in that bad of condition just overnight.

seriously it was no more than 3 days. I remember because I keep track of all my feeding scheduals!

Is that gecko housed separately or with other geckos. If it's with others it could have gotten sick, stressed, or attacked.

All of my leos including her are housed in seperate 30qt containers. The tubs are clear and she was next to a male blizz. Could that have been a problem? Before I had the rack, they never saw eachother..

That gecko looks really bad, I dont think that could happen in a matter of a few days either,(correct me if i am wrong anybody). She looks like she is loseing weight rapidly and maybe dehydrated?. I don't know, but you should see a vet and get some fecals on your geckos asap.
Was she having watery stools? Laying eggs or gravid?
If she was really ok 3 days ago maybe someone else will know of something, but you really should get her to a vet asap.

The red part on the tail is from stuck shed(probably been their awile). If some of your others have it too, you need to get it off or they will lose part of the tail.

I keep all of my animals in 100% best conditions I can afford. I clean/feed/ and water whenever needed. All of their food is gutloaded and every tub has a humid hide in it. So please don't say I don't take care of my animals properly

u needa take in yr leo for a vet check and when u go take in all of yr insects 1 of each 1 cricket, 1 superworm(if u got it) and all that to have him check the food. get yr problem fixed and that is hard 2 beleave that yr leo did all of that in just a total of 3 days. i see my leos everyday and they cant become that way in 3 days seriously, she would have to have a parasite that went into hideing mode (cant remem full name) and then it all the sudden came out. you saying u take good care of yr leos u prolly do but it looks like u forgot 1 to take care of.. if i am looking like an ass i am sry but that stuff drives me crazy you need to start looking, checking, in on yr leos everyday atleast 1-2 times a day... i check up on my 3 leos everytime of the day that i can. when i am home i got them in my hand or they are eating.. when i am not home they are out with my parents...
by the way guys that female i had that wasnt eating she is eating now with no problem..... thanx again for the help lets try to help this guy out now
thanx again

I check up on my leos more than most people do and I look them over often. I also make sure that each leo eats befor I slide the tub back in. I am currently trying to get her to take some parazap which she did about 5 min ago and she also started to try to get out of my hands. This is better than when I first saw her. I only have 12 leos and i spend a good hour with them when I have the time. It just so happened that I was unable to see the leo's for two 1/2 days so I couldn't check on them. I do thank you for you concern!

ByRandom Apr 03, 2004 09:20 PM

I'm sorry to say, but I doubt this gecko could get into that bad of shape in a week, let alone three days. Or, she has a very very bad infection of some sorts. It is my opinion that this gecko could still be saved, but a vet visit is required, as none of us are going to be able to diagnose the problem for you. If they suggest putting it down decline, and begin a daily feeding ritual with a slurry that Marcia has made. Email her for the ingredients. Don't give up. If it dies, then you did all you could to save it, but to put it down would be the lazy man's way of dealing with it.

has she been breeding or ovulating reciently??? if so she could be eggs bound... what was her approx weight prior to this? the yellow discoloration might be the eggs and the thiness in the tail is a sympton of leos being eggs bound... i have seen leos be excellent one day and on deaths door the next.... it doesnt happen alot in fact rather rare but it can happen

I used to take in lots of sick/dying leos as rescues, and I'm very sorry, but I sincerely doubt this leo will survive. Usually, when they are gasping for air and their eyes are sunken like that, they are on death's door. I have seen several leos lose about 50% of their tail reserves in 48-72 hours as the fat and water becomes mobilized very quickly.

I cannot be sure, but her tail appears to be burned on the end... is there any chance the heat may have gone too high?

GoldenGate....the temps are fine in the entire rack, that was the first thing i checked

Others.....she has passed now, she couldn't have been egg bound i don't think, she was nowere near a male.

Thanks To Everyone

She could have become eggbound, irregardless of any exposure to a male. Leos can produce non-fertile eggs and they can get stuck just like fertile ones.

Hi

I'm sorry that you lost her, it really hurts to loose one of your L. Geckos that you love so much.
