Humidity question

biscuit71 Apr 03, 2004 09:48 PM

I have a Dumerils in a 20 Gal long with Aspen bedding. my question is, what is teh easiest way to keep the humidity up? I spray 2 times a day, morning and evening, and that seems to work for a while, but it still seems too dry as he seems to be getting slightly dehydrated. I have a large water bowl in the cage, and i have never seen him drink. He eats fine, but when he turns his head, there are wrinkles in the bend, and i was told that is a sign of dehydration. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.
For heat, i use an UTH with an overhead night bulb. I'm thinking maybe the bulb is drying out the air.... maybe?

Hi,

Aspen is what I use for my Sand Boas. It is great for keeping the humidity DOWN. It is also notorious for molding when wet.

If you want to use a wood product you might what to try something like Repti Bark or other similar wood bark product that holds moisture. Other things that you can do are use a larger water dish, move the water dish closer to the heated side or cover part of the screen top with either a damp towel or plastic.

The lamp will definitely dry out the air. Do you have to use the lamp because the air temp in the house is so cold? Are you using a thermostat? If so I would loose the light and just stick with the UTH.

Hope I helped.

Great.. thanks for the info. I turned off the light, and I am going to keep with teh msiting to see what happens. Looks like the temp is staying about the same, so the light wasnt really doing all thatmuch. thanks again....
