Substrate question again..

InsideOutsider13 Apr 03, 2004 10:27 PM

I posted this before but no one seemed to see it I guess. It said that my crested gecko was ingesting quite a bit of coconut fiber (its substrate) when it would go after its prey. It is a six inch male and it loves crickets, I want a natural looking substrate so I was just curious if this would affect him in negative ways or if his digestive system could handle it. Most websites recommended that coconut fiber was a good substrate due to its high humidity holding abilities and because it is digestable, so just get back to me when ya can with some advice, thanks!

Mix it with some soil, pack it down hard, and then add a layer of leaves.

If I were you, I would just use paper towel. If you want it to look nice toss some leaves over the paper towel. Easy to clean, looks nice, and you don't have to worry about your ciliatus eating the substrate.

When collecting leaves make sure you are getting them from a pesticide free area.

Wouldn't the crickets hide under the leaves and not get eaten?

Feed at night. The crickets will run around for a little while before they begin to hide. This gives your ciliatus a chance to eat them. Those crickets that are not eaten right away will eventually walk around that night at which point they will get eaten if your cilitus is still hungry. Lastly, put a dish of cricket food in the tank.
