First shed question - red on discarded skin by cloaca normal?

wilson-ck Jun 13, 2003 07:15 AM

My new ball shed a few days ago, the first time for me. It came off as one full piece, except for 1 cm by his tail. There is a small ring of red on the discarded skin by the cloaca, which I can only assume is blood. Is this normal? Has it happened to anyone else?

I also fed him a rat pup shortly after his shed and he reguritated it, though I wonder if it was too large...

Thanks! CKW

I have seen this periodically. But so far it's had no impact on any of the snakes that had it. The next shed usually came out clean.

However, I would examine the suspected area. If there are no obvious "issues", I would just watch the snake and wait for the next shed.

While it probably is nothing, if it persists you should probably see the vet. I've seen a few snakes that were injured by someone probing them too roughly. Perhaps the result of someone trying to sex a lot of 1000 snakes really quickly in order to be able to turn around and sell them???? Just a thought...

Very good question CKW!!! First time my Monty shedded which was about a month ago, he had a full shed but there was about 1/4" on his tail that didn't come off right then. There was no red or anything like that, but eventually, it came off about 4 days later...
Good Luck!!!
