bigdee Apr 04, 2004 11:15 AM

Hello im selling my leopard geckos and I want to get some bp's I have a pair of boas. My question is what should I get is there anything I can get that is not hundreds of $$$$$ I gues I will also get a normal or 2. How can someone on a low budget get in on the bp projects? I want to start low and be able to build upwards any advice will be appreciated.

Breeding normals is fun and rewarding, but not financially rewarding. By late summer/early fall you should be able to get a pair of hets or a single pastel for a reasonable price and get started in whatever morph you like the most (unless your heart's set on a lucy!). There should be enough competition and available hatchlings this year to drive prices down at least 20% from current offerings. Also with increased competition will come more breeders willing to work with you on payment plans. Wait it out and have fun!

I hate to tell you but with BP morphs your not looking at any way to actually get in inexpensivley. This is why most people are wanting to get into the market. I started out just getting some corns and a BRB to pass the time and gain experience waiting on the right financial moment. IMO I suggest grab a couple of normals get used to the care of a BP and sometimes the frustration LOL. Save money and start planning what morph you would like to start in on and decide how to go from there. It usually doesnt work out when someone is just loking at how to get in the Business with low up front cost. No investment is cheap...wich is why they are called investments. But with reptiles ,as you well know, you also have to worry about not just the purchase price investment but the care love and respect investments you'll have to give to the snake. I just purchased a pastel and two normal females. The total price was more than I paid for my 48" widescreen tv. It took alot of saving and sacrifice..no I dont make the big bucks. In the end I got a snake that I really wanted and a good investment. Now Slowly I will use the offspring to produce supers and try and make trades for future projects. It's all about want you truly want. I can however gaurantee you knowone will be giving you any morph for the price of a normal . However if you do research spend alot of time on here and elswhere and make connections with breeders you can as pfish said work out deals and payment plans. But only if they know its for a good home.
Sorry so long just felt like rambling today. Hope it wasnt to much in short dont force it have fun and stay interested and good things will happen. If your determined you will get what you want. Remember with anything you get what you pay for and only reap what you put into it.

Ok first how do you get super pastels? I found a deal for some snakes to pay over a 6 week period the snake is suppose to be chipped, pappers and garantee. How do send someone money over 6 weeks without getting jerked like say they dont send the snake? I went on the other site and did a search on their name but nothing. I do have experience, I have leos and boas and a ball was my first reptile.

yeah I knew you were experienced thats why I posted. I dont usually reply to people I dont think would respect the reply. Anyways I would check around on the name of the breeders you will be making a deal. with if you want E mail me..not post the name and I can ask around as well. My adress is earthpig23@yahoo.com. If the dealer is genuine then it sounds like a good plan.
Now as for Super Pastels it's a what you get if you breed two pastels togther. Super pastels when bred to normals produce all pastels no hets or normals. Thats the quick explanation.

If you want a morph and cannot afford the big bucks, you can do what I and many other new breeders are doing. I purchased several normal females and a couple of het males. I bought a het for albino male and a male that is het for ghost. I paid $350 total for both males. It will take me 2-4 years but hey, it was cheap and I will produce the morphs that I want for little investment. The big thing is the waiting game but that is part of the reward when you finally produce something cool. Just an option that I thought I would mention. Good luck.

Thats just what i been asking in chats. So are you talking 0 hets? If you bree the hets to norm can you get albinos or what ever and when I know enough to know that the offspring will not be albino and im thinking the offspring will have to be bred back to the 0 hets?

all4sky Apr 05, 2004 06:12 PM

When you breed 100% hets to a normal you can get 50% hets, you then breed all the females back to their 100% father and usually something is bound to show up but it may take years as Kegman states. Most of the big name breeders now started this way and it does take years and years. The only way to get a jumpstart is if you are pretty wealthy to begin with, OR you have some wealthy people that can invest in your projects that dont think you're crazy for spending that much money on snakes. You can also invest in a male co-dom morph like a pastel and just raise him up with a colony of nice CB females and in about 3 years you can be producing those also. Good luck

You can actually produce albinos in as little as 3 years if you buy a 03 male that is het and find some females that will breed this fall. They should be at least 1500 grams for the female and the general consensus is 500 grams for a male, but a bigger male would be better. Sometimes smaller males are not quite as fertile, some say. You should have no problem finding an 03 het for albino male right now. Get some big females or some that will be big enough by fall and you are in business. It will take at least 2 years to get your 50% poss het females up to breeding weight after you hatch eggs next year. Some have gotten their females ready to breed in as little as a year but 2-3 years is more realistic. Breed all the females back to dad and chances are, a few will be het and then you can make albinos.
