The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have run a vociferous campaign against the keeping of reptiles and amphibians as companion animals in the UK for several years. The current RSPCA policy claims that Exotic animals such as snakes and lizards often carry disease, are difficult to look after and are unsuitable as companion animals.

I thought the ASPCA was the one decent animal welfare organization out there in the US... they'd BETTER not start getting ideas from the RSPCA! Sounds like the UK is becoming an increasingly sucky place to live for herpers.

(I thought this already happend here in the US. But maybe it was the Humane society, and not the ASPCA, that was trying to shut down the entire reptile trade.)

I do remember they were overwhelmed with signatures, and the issue then died--I hope for the same outcome in the UK.

It was the HSUS here, and PETA isn't helping at all. As far as I can tell the ASPCA is concentrating on preventing cruelty to animals, instead of becomign the Society for Prevention of Animal Ownership.
