Turtle flying regulations?

binker123 Apr 04, 2004 12:11 PM

I think I already know what the answers to this will be but I'm trying to do some research anyway. Next year I will be studying abroad in England for the academic year. Do any of you know if there are any regulations on flying overseas with pet turtles? (I'd imagine it's not allowed, but I still want to find out). Any sites I could check? All of the sites online regarding 'pet travel' are in reference to cats and dogs - people need to realize that 'pet' DOES NOT EQUAL only a cat or only a dog, but I'm ranting. Anyway, any advice would be appreciated. I'd love to take my turtle with me, though I doubt I'd be allowed to. Still, a girl can be well-informed. Thanks.

You cannot bring a turtle on an airplane, although I do know people that have smuggled them aboard. I'd imagine with the new security meassures you would probably be caught. Most people ship them overnight to wherever they are going and meet them there, but I don't think you could ship her internationally.

Technically, I think most airline companies do not allow it. However, that does not mean you cannot try asking them personally or request it. I know friends who called them up and they said it's ok as long as they're not too big (like hatchling RES) and carried with you at all times. Often there's a loophole if you're willing to do the research and give a good reason. OR, you can put them in your pockets and if they catch you with them, play dumb and be like "whoaaa..how did those get in there??" hahahahah, jk.

There has to be a way to get them there, what if you were moving there permanently? It can't be impossible.

Call the airlines... Ask them... I flew from US to Germany with two ferrets and two snakes on board. I just had to call and ask. But also check with the country you are flying to. They might not allow RESs or such in that country.

Before you worry about the airlines, check with the countries customs and fish/wildlife. You might have to quarantine the animal there for 6 months prior to her being released to you. I know when I carried animals to hawaii some of them had to be quarantined by the state before they were released to me. You issue is more about international animal regulations than whether the airlines will allow it.
