What kind of snake do you have? I have a jungle carpet in a 40 gallon breeder size tank with a UTH (under the tank heater) and a 100wt basking light. Both on the same end. Also at night a red light to help heat it. The day time temp is near 90 on hot side and in the 70's on other side.
With my corns they also have a UTH with regular incandecent lights. These set ups work well for my snakes. They have good feeding responses and are active.
Also my lights are on timers so they get a day/night cycle. If you just use a light for heat then it's hard to give them a 'night' time from what I've read.
This is just my experience. :0)
Do you have 2 hiding places for your snake? One on hot side and one on cool side.
Just my opinions as I'm no expert :0)
Sorry about that I have a jungle carpet python. I do have hide spots on both sides. I took the uth off today and put the heat light back on and he seems alot more active. When I have the light on him he eats great and seems to be way more active. Maybe the heat pad was putting off too much heat?
Thanks for your help.

I use Heattape along the underside of one side of my Vision Enclosures to keep the ambient temp up at night. During the day, I have a heat lamp that is on over a couple of climbing branches. The higher he goes, the warmer it gets...i am paranoid about nighttime low's "I keep my herps in the Garage here in Florida", so the heat tape is insurance that things won't get too cold. I have noticed that the snakes seem to prefer them lamps. At least my Jungles and IJ's do.
