Substrate?? Dirt....Specifically to Sunfox

xitch45 Apr 04, 2004 10:19 PM

RIght now I use sand for Fluffy. I used it first, then switched to bird seed which turned out bad because it was when he was still not acclimated so he discharges a lot of liquid along with his poop which caused to seed to mold. However, I have been contemplating using dirt, but wonder what kind specifically. Sunfox, Ra seems very content on his dirt (and whole cage, too!) so I ask what type is it? "Top soil," "potting soil," or just dirt-from-the-yard? Also, would it be a good idea to bake the dirt first to kill parasites? Thanks in advance.

I used a mix of playsand and organic potting soil (no additives). The organic potting soil contains peat humus, peat moss, sand, vermiculite, and perlite. I think the extra playsand I added in might not really be necessary. The substrate does a great job of coating and drying out uro poop for easier scoop up. This mixture holds together better when it's kinda damp but I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to extra moisture in the tank. I'm still working on making an artificial burrow for Ra to hide in. Ra likes his new soil and as he gets darker, he blends in a lot better with this stuff than just plain playsand. He does get a little dirty though.

I'll post some new pics soon.

Good luck

check out our FAQ about Uro threads at the link below. we all spent much time discussing it back and forth, there is a lot of information there..

i try to keep my web guy on top of updating the links as they get archived, but some may be out of date, but it is a simple fix, you can amend the addresses yourself, and still see the posts...
