Flat-Head Snake Care

CrittersMailToo Apr 04, 2004 11:36 PM

Hi, i just caught a flat-head snake and wasn't sure where to post but i picked here because hes small. I would like to know the proper care, and proper size enclosure, and also what it eats.Right now its in a 2-gal Kritter-Keeper with some eco-earth and sphagnum moss as a substrate. He also has a water bowl he can soak in in there for him. I would also like to know how to tell his gender and is it possible that i could put another speices of reptile in there with him? Thanks in advance.

Still deciding on whether it is rough or smooth, though. Looks like his substrate is fine, I will add mulch to it tomorrow. They eat mostly earthworms from what I've read; any other info I might need to know?

Thanks,
Jared

They eat earthworms and small bugs, maybe salamanders. Some people say that are difficult to keep in captivity, but I have never had them so I wouldn't know. Telling the difference between a smooth or a rough earth snake is easy, if you can tell the difference between a smooth scaled snake and rough scaled snake then you should have no problem. Sexing may be difficult if you don't know how to sex, otherwise I don't think you can tell male or female in them.

I just had to get him out again today and look at him; last night I let him stay in the tank unbothered, that is why I wasn't sure at the time.

I have earthworms for it, so we'll see how it goes; that's what I fed him last night.

Thanks!
