U.phantasticus hatchlings

juksu Apr 05, 2004 01:56 AM

- So I posted some pics and question about the u.phantasticus eggs couble of months ago.

I think everything has gone great because few days ago (1.4) when I came back from work I noticed that other egg has a hole in it. And a closer look I found tiny little baby from a corner of a box. ;D Later that day (aroud 8pm) the other baby hatch out from it's egg.

They have shred their first skin and hopefully they survive these nex weeks or so. I have feed them whit fruit flies and try to keep temperatures low as I can aroud 20'c (It's kinda triggy because the room tem is 24'c).
I have use some cold water (placed a delicup filled whit cold water to top of the box where the babies are) and keeping the balcony door open to keep tem low but it's not working good as iot should.

If some one has a good tip for cooling the box I'm glad to hear it.

I will be posting some pics later. I don't want to stress them too much.

Cheers
Sami

i'm glad both of them hatched out for you with the unfortunate mishap that ocurred earlier. seems like it all worked out pretty good if they make it through the next few weeks.

wow good luck man. i have gotten 3 to hatch and all are doing great. you may have seen pics ive posted of them in my photo gallery. like i said, i start them on fruit flies, some people say wingless but mine did fine with the winged ones. theyre easy to culure and will do them well for the first few weeks. after that, when they seem like theyve got the energy and size, i started feeding mine the smallest crickets i could get from the pet stores around me. it was difficult, but they eat them as long as they can fit in their mouths. heres a picture of my female hatchling eating a tiny cricket. im sure you know how tiny these things are!

I used to use this method to cool salt water tanks and am trying it with a set-up for Cresteds if it works well I am going to use it to set up some Uroplatus enclosures. Take a water cooler or small space saver sized refrigerator, fish tank pump or powerhead that will hook to tubing. To use the water cooler just use the cooler as the sump. If useing a refrige punch holes through the side to run tubing through (I used 3/8 inch copper line one to feed, one to return to the sump) you have to put a sump inside. Run the tubing across the back wall or floor of your enclosure. Cover with screen and some light substate. Use a thermostat to turn the pump on and off to pump the cool water into the tubing lowering the temp in the cage. I made an enclosure from plywood and fiberglass resin with a glass front. I incorperated this system into it and I can keep the temps in there at as low as an astonishing 45 degrees F. I can't wait untill my baby cresteds are big enouph to move in. It works great.
