burrowing under paper towels

SuperGeckoberry Apr 05, 2004 04:15 AM

My new male loves to burrow under paper towel substrate. He claws and scratches and lifts up the towels, then goes underneath and stays there.

This has never happened to me before. Anybody have any ideas why? Is he trying to tell me that he needs another hide?

Dont know what he want to tell you, but mine like to hide underneath the cloth i've put in his humid hide. Maybe they just like that.

I think its a phase. For about a month, my girl was always getting under the paper towels and hiding. Then she just stopped. I don't think its anything to worry about.

Its just natural exploration. Its no different than your gecko deciding it wants to go in a hide. The only thing to worry about is if you have an undertank heater, dont let him get too close to it. I know if i dont have several layers over mine, it gets really hot.

It's not just a phase... At least for my leos. I have 3 who do it all the time - a male and 2 fems.. It's a pain when I have to get them out and they're under the towels, but they seem to enjoy it. Maybe they get better heat that way?? No clue..

One of my girls always used to hide under the felt substrate. Not sure why non of the others have ever done this and she didn`t do it for the first 2-3 years I had her. Sometimes she wouldn`t come out for days, I got really scared at first. She still does it now and then but not like she used to.

I found that mine does it on days when i don't mist the night before. Underneath the moss stays moist when the top dries up. I always assumed it was her looking for more moistier. She loves her humid hide too, the only hide she stays in. Temps are all good and stuff, she must likethe soft moss or something beats me.

Hi

My male likes to go under the papertowel substrate also and had done it for a long time, thus I had given him the name "Hideaway".
