not pooping

randi Jun 13, 2003 09:17 AM

I've had Lola since Monday and she hasn't pooped yet. She is a juvie, probably about 7 months old. She eats well but it doesn't seem to be coming out the other end. Any suggestions? I tried giving her a warm bath earlier. She's sitting on her basking branch now warming up after the bath and getting snarfled by my cocker spaniel. He found her very fascinating.

Warm baths while gently rubbing her stomach should help. Also, she may be dehydrated so mist her and/or drip some water on her snout to see if she drinks. You also should check your basking spot and make sure it reaches 110 degrees so she can properly digest her food. I'd keep the dog away from her at least until she settles down into a regular, healthy pattern. Constipation can also be a sign of parasites so if she does go soon I would take a fecal sample to your herp vet.

Since he is eating I would offer shreaded or pureed carrots as this often helps making them poo. Carrots have a fair bit of water in them and beardies like the taste so it nicely hydrates them. Daily warm soaks in water is benefical as the massaging the stomach and intestine area, moving towards the vent.

Do you have any knowledge of teh husbantry of the dragon from the previous owner? There is always a chance he could be impacted. Get in touch if possible with the former owner and see if they can say the last time he pooed while in their care.

It also could just be new place stress and the dog probably isn't helping that is keeping him from pooing. Separate the dog for awhile as suggested alrighty till the dragon is accustomed to his new home..could take up to a week or two for this to happen.

Lola took a big poop that was really really smelly. Since I always clean my tanks out of waste every day she won't knock out any of the neighbours.

Thanks for all your advice. The bath seemed to do it.

As for the dog, Lola comes running over to the side of the tank to see both the dogs. They really pay no attention to her for the most part. It was just too interesting for Winston when Lola and I were on the floor bathing. Winston's best friend for the first year of his life was a bunny so he is gentle with little critters.
