My eggs have collapsed !!!!!!!!!!!!

RedQuake Apr 05, 2004 10:18 AM

It started out with a dent in both but now they are so sunk in i pretty much think they are gone. After two weeks of incubation at a steady temp range of 80.5-81.5 does this mean they are infertile or that something went wrong with the incubating? Also, if a female is breed, produces hatchlings from the first 3-4 clutches can further clutches actually be infertile??? Or because she was bred all of the eggs should be fertile???

With all the bad stuff happening lately, this just added to to my desire for a long vacation away from everything..... especially if losing the eggs was due to my failure somehow.

I've noticed a decrease in Abby's tail size too. She spends most of her time in one of the two humid hides but i've seen her out and about. I can't see any bad poops in the bathroom area but i'm separating her just to see better if she's actually eating alot. I've kept a full bowl of mealworms in with the girls at all times and it goes down so i know someone is eating them. But with 5 girls together its harder to monitor who is eating the most.

I have a really dumb question totally unrelated to this post topic, but since i'm writing i'll post it here.....can you have a striped amel fattailed gecko?

As for the eggs, i'm a bit scared to open one up to see if its fertile. I would like to candle them but being so sunk in i fear i'll squish them more by picking them up.

Any suggestions is appreciated
Red

I had that problem and i used some damp sphagnum moss over top of the eggs and the dents popped back up in a couple days. But get a clean grade of sphagnum moss because i recently heard that most have mold spores or something w/in the moss that will grow when dampened. I think it's tru anyways because right after i did it my eggs are now covered w/ mold and i'm having a really hard time trying to fix them. Using half water and half hydrogen peroxide to wipe the eggs off seems to work. But i have the problem of needing the sphagnum moss since the eggs aren't fully popped out yet (mainly due to me trying to repair them everyday).

Thankyou. I've been keeping a moist piece of papertowel on top of them hoping they would pop up and despite the humidity at around 85% i've got mold forming and they aren't popping up. Not at all a great feeling, seeing the eggs go from so perfect looking to this.

Thanks again

I'm so sorry Red! I'm sure it wasn't your fault, bad things happen. I just wanted to let you know that you CAN have striped albino/amel fat tails. Now only if I could afford one...hmmm. Cheer up! At least you didn't spend $150 on a rack set up that barely gets above 75 degrees. Which would be find if I didn't live in OHIO where the weather doesn't match the seasons. It's like in the 30's-40's so I'm cold, and my babies aren't so warm. So don't worry, be happy!

You have no idea how much better i feel now thanks to you!!! This past week has been so horrible i hardly got out of bed over the weekend. Flame looks as if she's developing eggs again and i'm thinking it might not be to late to breed Boo and Zoe so i might still come out with viable eggs. If not theres always next year

As for the amel fattail....i was in absolute awe of the prices but ya know.....i really would like to have one so i might still spend the money. I really have to watch though cause my job isn't looking to great so money might become an issue in the near future...

I have this place to come to when i want to be *around* people with the same interest as me, so that is a great help on really bad days. I'll try to be happier

P.S. sorry to hear about your rack!!!

Hey Red, Wait till you spend three grand on 1.3 amel fatties and then lose eggs... OUCH! If your incubating medium was too dry and you got slight denting they might pop up, but I've never had dented or moldy eggs hatch - lost about 40 this year to some bad vermiculite. If your eggs are fertile, temps are in range, medium is not funky and moisture is not bone dry or sopping wet they will hatch. Keep trying.

RedQuake Apr 06, 2004 10:02 AM

Hi, sorry to hear about the loss! 40 eggs thats just aweful!!!

Your fattails are absolutely amazing!!!! I'm in total awe of them. But 3 grand is a bit more than i can spend. I'll be lucky if i can pay out $500 for an amel. Time to find better paying work i guess, i can't seem to get ends to meet with this one LOL. It is something i'm ready to work hard for though. Those geckos are so beautiful

There are many variables in incubating eggs...everything appears to be alright (temps moisture) but i don't know if the vermiculite is bad or funky. I'll definetly keep trying but i think i'll incubate clutches in separate containers (one egg per container) and vary the medium to see if thats the problem.

Thanks for the encouragement and sharing the pic.

Just wait a few seasons. Look at the price of leopard albinos compared to five years ago. I just got them to see if we can intensify the color some more. About eight years ago I paid 300 for a screaming orange fattie (not amel) from a big Florida breeder but evidently there was some manipulation that was done to get the color and it turned normal in a month. When the tang amels came out it was OK, let's try again. Be patient Grasshopper.

The more i look into fattails the more i realize theres alot more colourations than i first realized. I've seen some nice peach and tangerine babies as well as some nice amel hets. I dont want to go overboard on them just find a nice pair (2 females or a male female). The April Toronto Reptile Expo is in a couple of weeks so i'll see whats there, but yes, i'm being very patient hehehe....i've seen a few AFT's that i could have picked up already but i've resisted the temptation.......for now hehehe

Thats an amazin pics by the way
