Run-over Black Rat slowly recovering...

evers310 Apr 05, 2004 12:18 PM

I finally got him to drink water, I was starting to get worried. He still wont drink out of a bowl though, I have to give him water from a dropper. Sometimes he will actually open his mouth and suck on the dropper like a baby sucking on a bottle! He refused to cooperate for the camera on that one though. I'm hoping he will be ready to eat soon, I put a pinkie in his cage the other day when I was feeding my King but he totally ignored it.

Glad to hear that.Try a bigger,pre-killed rodent and wave it in front of he/she on a set of tongs and just maybe it will grab it and swallow. Here's a pic of mine and good luck!

That is good advice about waving the mouse in front of the snake. That is how I get mine to eat quickly. I just think that it is too soon to start trying to feed him at this time. If it won't move its jaws to drink water, I think that indicates that the area is still very sore. The snake can go for a long time without food. Give him a chance to heal. When you see it being able to drink on its own, I think that is when you offer it food.

Best of luck. Please keep us posted.

Wow! awesome snake! I hope this guy heals up and looks that good one day. Tomorrow is feeding day for my snakes, hopefully he'll eat. I dont think he's eaten yet this spring.

Well, were you able to get him to eat? You are right about him being a nice looking snake.

Yes! I got him to eat a thawed fuzzy last night and another one this morning! I had to put it in his mouth and help him get it down though. I still have to give him watter with the dropper because he still refuses to dring out of the bowl, I just think he's spoiled He seems to be getting much stronger too. He moves around a lot more and is a lot steadier, but he still curls his neck in a circle right behind his head a lot. He loves to climb, he's climbing all over my head and neck as I'm typing this.

Thats great news!Sounds like it will make you a very nice pet snake.Black rats are great!

That is great news. Try to feed him in one sitting. With that big of snake, and that small of prey, you might try feeding him every four or five days. I still think his jaw an neck are sore, so give him time to heal.

I have two Black Rats myself, and I think that they are great. Yours seems to be very tame. I wish you and your snake the best of luck.

Keep us posted.
