WTF Setup

specialK Jun 13, 2003 09:38 AM

OK, I'm trying to set up a new habitat for 2 new Whites I'll be getting in about a week. I've got a 39 Gal tall aquarium. I want to add a water feature but I'm having a little trouble. I put about 3 inches if stones on the bottom and added water up to the top of the stones and cleared out a little area for a pond. I placed a small water pump in an upside down plastic bowl (with holes in it) to sit around the pump and keep the rocks away from the pump. THe pump is connected to a hose that will lead to the top of a little waterfall kind of arrangement. I'm going to put some kind of substrate over the rocks along with plants, branches, moss, etc.

Here's the porblem, I am concerned with the water quality. The pump does not have a filter. I thought I could just take an aquarium cleaner (like a siphon hose) and stick it in the pond area - drain the water and ad new water every week or so. But if one of my WTF's takes a dump in the water (even though I'll scoop it out the same day) I still might have a water porblem (??).

I also have an aquarium filter (the kind that hangs on the top of the tank) but it isn't strong enough to suck the water up the hose from the bottom of the tank. I thought of mounting it inside the tank so that the attached intake will sit in the gravel & water but I'm concerned that the water quality will still suffer because of the rocks preventing any solids from getting to the filter. Is this a porblem?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

The water needs to be changed every other day. You can use a wet vac to suck the water out. Hope this helps a bit.
