You might be feeling a little discouraged right now because your mali doesn't seem to want to come out and visit with you. I just want you to know that this is completely normal. I was there about a year ago with my mali Ra. He always hid whenever I was around, I could swear that when he heard the door open, he'd go and hide. After giving this situation some thought, I decided that I'd let him decide when he wants to spend time getting to know me. I continued to give him his food every day and just do what I usually do. After a few months, he began accepting food and treats from my hand, and now, I see him out of his hide, running around, playing and eating. He doesn't care if I'm walking around the room or even if I'm close to the tank and looking right at him. He doesn't run from me anymore (well, sometimes he does but rarely).
Just take your time. If you rush it, you might scare him and that'll slow down the entire process. Let him decide when he's comfortable with getting to know you better. Keep feeding him and keep trying to offer him treats by hand, he'll trust you eventually.
Good luck with your mali
