Rubidus STILL hasn't laid....

oldherper Apr 05, 2004 01:58 PM

Now I'm getting concerned.... She's been tearing her cage apart for a week and a half now, but still hasn't laid. I have a call in for the vet. He's not in today and I spoke to a receptionist that might as well have been a waitress at the local Denny's and I could just as well have been speaking Chinese. I had to leave a voice mail for him, but he's pretty good about getting back to me quickly. I hate this.....

oh, when my females are due, i put them in a sweater box w/ a nest box contained within. this cuts down on all their running around, possibly mislaid eggs [in waterbowl] and they calm right down, coil up and are grateful for the snuggness, isolation and dampness. a roomy cage [even w/ a nestbox in it] is not her idea of an ideal spot to lay. give it a try and she'll settle right down. and you'll both get some peace of mind!! hope this is of some help and best of luck!..........

Thank God!!! She finally started laying this morning. 6 eggs so far and still working....all look good so far. They do vary quite a bit in size, but all are nice and white and sand-papery. Most are quite large...I always wonder how they manage to squeeze those things out...no wonder she's in a bad mood, huh?

The smallest: 45.4mm len/28mm dia/19.84gm
The largest: 73.91mm len/30.98mm dia/42.52gm (this one looks like it may possibly be a "double"

Well, it looks like the final tally is 9 eggs. All look good at this point, although some are quite a bit larger than others. In fact, some are enormous...over 3 inches long. A couple are about the size of a normal large colubrid egg..a little over 2 inches long. They firmed right up and took on the "sandpaper" feel right away, all are a good white color, good and full and plump...I think they are all OK.

I think she was just trying to worry me...dragging it out as long as she could. And, it worked...I had an appointment with the vet this afternoon if she didn't go ahead and lay.

Congrats, Oldherper!

My large female rubidus dropped five eggs on the 4th, ten days post ecdysis. Unfortunately, two were duds, but the other three are looking great. The smaller female has gone into the blue, so she shouldn't be too far behind.
I will forward you some photos later. I too, noted the size variance.
