i live in california also and i was wondering the same thing so i called the california fish&game and they told me that your allowed to have 3 native species of rattlesnakes without a permit and if you have 4 or more native rattlesnakes then you have to have a permit. and its illegal to have any venomous snake in california that isnt a native species.

those are not native species, are those illegal?

yes rear fanged snakes are legal because most of them are not deadly, a guy at my local pet store has some rear fanged asian vine snakes and my pet store is currently selling a false water cobra so im sure that rear fanged snakes are legal in california

only twig snakes and boomslangs are prohibited so far boiga, hydronastes, etc are not regulated or restricted.

but it also depends on what county you live in.....some local regs are very strict so be careful.
