I use carefresh for all of my gaboons and rhinos..... Even my puffs like it...... It holds hunidity when you need it to and the snakes can burry themselve in it quite easily...... Stay away from repti bark...... I could be injested and cause an impaction..... Care fresh is way safer.....
thanks Gregg is the carefresh u mean is it the one made from wood pulp is the only one i can find around here hopes its the same its white in color
You have many options but here's a few good ones (that we use on our gaboons, rhinos, bush vipers, Tri's, etc.):
1) Carefresh: good stuff, we have experienced very few problems
2) Newspaper/Paper Towel: for baby gabbys it is probably an excellent choice. Can be heavily misted down daily and discarded as much as needed. Hold humidity well and mold/fungus is slow to grow on these heat treated products. Prevents any accidental ingestio and cheap!
3) ESU Jungle Mix: I am not a big fan of commercial substrates for reptiles but this stuff is really good. We cover the bottom of the cages with several inches of this stuff, mist it down real good and then place a "blanket" of unrefined spaghnum moss over the surface...this not only helps to retain humidity well, but the animals like to burrow into the bedding. Plus, it looks pretty nice/natural. Only down side...stuff is expensive. We are working on developing our own concoction for the wildlife center I direct based on taking all of the good qualities of eacch substrate.
Hope this helps. Rob
