moss question...which is best?

dravenxavier Apr 05, 2004 10:12 PM

I have been trying to decide on a type of moss to use in my terrarium, but don't know enough about any one in particular to really pick the best one. So far, I'm leaning toward the java moss. I've heard it's the fastest growing, and easiest as long as it stays moist (shouldn't be too hard in a rainforest vivarium :-P). But there's also pillow moss and such. I'm wondering what people's favorite choice is. The vivarium I'm building will be humid and moist as usual, and will be lighted by 4 20,000K compact flourescents in 'bright kits' from ahsupply.com. So...it should be rather bright. A definite factor to take into consideration. Thanks for your help.

I definitely recommend the Java. However, I would not use 20,000K bulbs--that is way too blue (might have been a typo). Ideal spectrum for dart frog tanks is 5,000k-6,700K. I don't know how many watts your bulbs are, and that will affect the brightness.

I think you'll find Java is great if you have enough light (which it sounds like you will). However, that's just my personal opinion, and others have had good luck with pillow moss.

I would love to try java moss if I had a area that was moist enough. But my tank is covered in tropical pillow moss. for the most part its doing great! but when hey say keep in in bright light they mean it! The areas where the moss get direct light are growing 'runners' and is just going great. The area aruond my broms for example isnt doing as well. But it still helps keep dirt of my darts and keeps em clean.

Does anybody recommend this?

I've actually got a large pot of it that's now overflowing. I plan on using some of this also, but it's BIG (well, in comparison to moss at least). It's not like a carpet, it's more like a pile of stuff. It's a cool plant, but it's not a true moss, and wouldn't really work as well in my opinion. I think it's best treated as an actual plant rather than a moss.
