What Incubating Median to use?

shane27 Apr 05, 2004 10:14 PM

I hear and read on the back of the vermiculite bag, it has asbestos. I also read in snake books that's what they use.
But now I am confused, cause I hear now that perilite is the only thing that I should used????
I need everyones imput on this ASAP due to the fact of 15 snakes getting ready to lay there eggs.

Thanks in advance!!

There are many different ways that work just fine. You've mentioned two of them. There is no one "only thing I should use." What you SHOULD do is cast great doubt on anyone who gives you advice with that kind of rigidity.

I've incubated many of the world's rarest honduran morphs, pyro morphs, and before that some of teh earliest queretero kings, etc., always using long-fiber sphagnum moss, the simple kind you find at almost any garden store. Soak it; wring it out; use it. It's NOT "the only thing you should use" but it's one more example of an incubation medium that'll work just fine for you.

btw, don't forget any time you have a question like this you can search the archives, too, and see the previous instances in which this same subject, or other subjects, have been discussed.

choose a method you feel good about, or try all three, and see for yourself which way works for you. I THINK you'll find they all work--none of them is going to kill your eggs or reduce your hatch rate--bukt one or the other might be more convenient for you.

Use whatever floats your boat.I've used vermiculite to hatch my leopard geckos and it worked fine. I've heard of others using perlite and saying that they have had higher hatching rates using it. I've heard sphagnum is good because it holds a lot of moisture. I think with my next clutch of LEO eggs I'm going to try Perlite to see what happens.
