Help!!! I'm new at Newts...

febbie Apr 05, 2004 10:37 PM

I've just recently gotten two Chinese Firebelly Newts.
There's one of them that's hand is raw to the bone and it's tail is cut in with a couple of bites in it's back. I have heard that Newts and Salamaders are able to regenerate limbs. Is that true and if so, how can I do it? Or is there a way to help it heal? Thanks

You might try "MelaFix". It is an all NATURAL (fish) medication. It will NOT cloud up the water, or stink it up. MelaFix is very inexpensive. . . $5.00 (U.S) Speaking from past experience the stuff does wonders! You should start to notice healing within the first 4 days of treatment. It heals and repairs damaged tissues without having to use antibiotics. Along with adding MelaFix to the tank water I would use a Qtip and apply some to his expossed abrassions at least once a day. Good Luck!

Thanks but... I don't think I can find anywhere close to me with it (besides my mom probably won't let me get it anyways)... 2 of his fingers fell off an I think the other one took another bite of his tail... what do you do then? Like, will it just heal on it's own?

btw can you keep 2 chinese firebelly newts together in a plastic 10 gallon with no heater or a filter? Or do you have to keep them in a glass aquarium? cause i have 2 firebellies together and i think the larger one is chomping on the little one...

Ok first off I would highly suggest you treat your newt with something. . . if not the Melafix then perhaps another aquatic anti fungal medicine for the sake of preventing infection. If you have a local Petsmart or Petco I would suggest going there.

To the best of my knowledge most newts/salamanders of the same species can be kept together. However in this case it doesn't seem to be working out. If you are using a 10 gallon tank you might try a tank divider which can also be picked up at Petsmart or Petco, but with their ability to climb that may not work. You could also pick up a 5 gallon terrarium tank (which is not too spendy). I would suggest you seperate them as soon as possible though.

As for the type of shrimp. . . I am no help. Other members should be along to offer further help in that department. When in doubt stick with what is safe. . . newt pellets, chopped earth worms, small crickets, etc.
