Pet stores

lizzylizard Apr 05, 2004 10:56 PM

I was in the pet store a weeks ago checking out their new juvie leos. Suprisingly they were full of energy and chasing crikets all over the place. I went back today and they all look very lathargic. One was almost fully submersed in the water dish. It was extremly pale, much more pale than if it was just going to shed (but I could be wrong). Another had its head just bearly above the water with its eyes closed. The rest of them were in the corner piled on top of each other. There was about 8-9 leos and fat tails in a 10 gallon.

Sorry I'm just not a big fan of pet stores, too many bad experiences.

There was also only one hide large enough for only one leo, what about the other 8.

I can't even look at the poor puppymill puppies anymore.

I wish there was some kind of inspection agency for pet shop...One that is close to my region has a lot of snake in little plastic container with just one hole, no water , no hiding, under a big bright light. Water dragon in an enclosure with just a little island of wet rock and the rest is dirty water...that guy has the nerve to call himself a reptile specialist !!!! I made a lot of complain...they dont work until i visit frequently and start to make complain in front of the other client, then it start to change a LITTLE bit. My best weapon is to tell my friend to NOT go there.

Just do a search online for your state's department of natural resources (DNR). They can and will get something done about petstores with ANY animals in poor condition. They are the ones that have all the state herp laws listed, and if you really want to get something done threaten the petstore to call them...and if that doesn't work...actually call them.

thanks for posting that, i think that it is really helpful to anyone. my dad told me the humane society cannot do anything about lizards or rather willnot because at petland in toledo ohio there were starved decomposing anoles in a tank with other living ones skinny to the point of death in with them. i threatened to call the humane society and they laughed, so i'll try the DNR.

some humane societies will do something...but not many...I think its b/c of certain laws or smt...I'm not sure. I've posted about the DNR before, but no one seemed to take notice...I just know of people that have called their state DNR and afterwards the store VASTLY improved...or stopped selling reptiles. Either way is better than sick and dying animals...

Unfortunately there is only one store here that has everything we need, and I really hate it because I really don't want to support that store. When I first got into Anoles they argued with me up and down that they live in colonies so it would be ok for me to put up to 10 males and females on my 20 gallon! Their herps all look so sick. We went in there last week and there was a kingsnake killing another (they had 3 in a 10 gallon) and when I told them they will kill each other they told me that wasn't true...they seperated the 2 then it went after the other. It makes me so mad. The baby leos are on bark, they have no hides and they all look so sick - they had 6 juvies in a 10 gallon with an adult lucistic (? spelling lol) last week, and they look worse everytime we go in there, and they are obviously dying off one by one. I wish I had the money to bring them all home, but at the same time I don't want to support the store and have them just turn around and bring in more. As much as I love all my little guys, it's really opened my eyes to the abuse. Sad.

I know I can't stand the thought of supporting pet stores like that. A few months ago I went to get a couple of tree frogs at a local pet store. I noticed a cute "little' yellow and orange frog and asked what the differences between this frog and a tree frog were, they told me they were pretty much the same. Well I bought this cute "little" frog which by the way is a pacman. Not only can pacmans grow to be the size of a dinner plate, he tries HARD everytime I feed him to take off my finger. By the way they have teeth and can do quite a bit of damage from what I've heard.

The pet store also told me to feed him only one cricket a day. If I had done that I'm pretty sure he would stay to be about the same size as a treen frog. However he would probably die a slow starving death. I think Pacmans live to eat, all he is right now is a mouth and four tiny legs.
