Will she lay her eggs on top of the moss?

Passport Apr 06, 2004 07:08 AM

Y'all will be glad when my girl lays her clutch and I'm not pestering you anymore. My female has completed her pre-lay shed and is using her moist laying box. Will she lay her eggs on top or the moss or down underneath the moss? Will it be easy to see the eggs? Or do I have to stir around in there to find them? Thanks.

Usually they will lay them under the moss, but it's not difficult to find them.....especially if the clutch is large. Just use less moss if you are worried about her hiding them from you. Good luck and let us know how many you get.

i use plastic boxes as layboxes, and fill them nearly to the opening in the top with sphagnum. it's easy to lift the box with the female in it, hold it over my head, and see if she's started laying; how many she's laid; if she's done. It's less intrusive than opening the box, uncovering her, etc., though snakes seem to tolerate a bunch of interference during breeding & laying, i've always tried to minimize it.
