Paint or nail polish on turtle's shell

Sohni Apr 06, 2004 09:28 AM

This is in reference to a box turtle, but I thought I'd ask about it here in addition to the boxie forum. Long story short, I received a very neglected adult box turtle yesterday. The teenage twit who was his former "owner" not only painted his claws with purple naiil polish, she also put something clear with glitter on his shell, maybe nail polish, too. Is there any way to get this off?

Hello I had a simular problem with a hermit crab not too long ago I know its alot different but I can help you a little bit. When the crab finally left the old painted shell behind I tried both paint thinner and nail polish remover on it and the paint didn't budge at all. I think it was the same type of nail polish that you described. anyway the only way i found to get it off was to slowly pick it off with my finger nail and you can get a corner up and it should peel off.

i'd just leave it, it shouldn't do any harm and it will just wear off in time. the top layers of the shell are keratin just like fingernails anyway.

ciao
