WILD CAUGHT TOKAY (at least i think it is) Questions>>>>>>>>need advice....

cv768 Apr 06, 2004 11:26 AM

I picked up a couple of tokays for about $10 each...they both appear to be females and when or if they ever get big enough they will go in with our other male in a larger enclosure.

Anyway, both of the females are fairly lively, I gave each 1 mL of fenbendazole and will do so again in 2 weeks just to make sure they are dewormed. It shouldn't hurt them.

But they are both fairly skinny as most wild caught stock is...does anyone have any advice on how to fatten them up.

They don't seem to be taking to crickets quite yet, maybe they just need to adjust to their new environment but either way I gave each of them some peach baby food with some reptivite vitamins mixed in through a syringe, orally.

Let me know if anyone has any advice on how to help them gain weight and when I could expect them to eat crickets.

thanks/.

they are prob stressed from a few diff things. 1) being caught 2) all the shipping 3) prob being in to small and cramped quarters 4) you have them in a new home again.
Give them some time to adjust. Mist daily and keep feeding. Dont try handling or messing with them much at all, be sure they have plenty of places to hide and get out of sight.

I would definetly agree with that. Dont bother them too much. They are hardy geckos and can fend for themselves if they get too hungry. Mine barely came out of his hide when I first got it and only ate when I dropped crickets very close to it so it didnt have to expose itself. After a while it got comfortable and ate very well. Make sure you have a large enclosure of 50 gallons for the adults and they will do much better.

And to fatten them up try some pinkies.

I had a problem w/ a Tokay I bought. Not only did he have lots of loose skin, but he had mouth rot. I used it to my advantage since I was forced to handle him daily and dropped a few wax worms or mealworms in his mouth after I would treat his mouth rot. He didn't seem to mind. He would swallow the worms when i'd put him back in his quarantine cage (which, i'm happy to say he will be out of in less than 2 weeks!). I wouldn't do this unless you really had to though. They tend to like crickets and lobster roaches, if you've got em.
