Eryx - All the fun of a boa in a convenient pocket size!
I remember watching a show where they discussed how scientists had witnessed tentacled snakes nibbling on the leaves of aquatic plants in their aquariums. This was a while ago, anyone else know about this, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else really...

I've heard it... it's been so long that I don't know if I talked to anyone that saw it firsthand. If it's true it makes them unique among snakes.

One consistantly ate gravel, even when i removed gravel from there tanks it would pass the old gravel through its system then eat it again, i think it was using it as a ballast.
P.S. there incredibly boring snakes.

As I posted several months ago, I keep this species. Mine has been with me for a few years now and is doing fine on a goldfish diet.
The water conditions are critical for success with these. They have to have acid ph. If it is too alkaline they develope a lethal blister disease. Tannins also seem important so a piece of driftwood in the tank helps. this also gives the snake something to anchor it.
Like all ambush predators there is little movement except when attacking prey, which is accomplished in a quick lunge, after which the prey is immediatly swallowed.
I keep mine in a 5gl tank. The lack of movement makes for a smaller tank size better, as it allows the snake more opportunities to catch the fish.
I have not ofered it plants....Maybe I will add an aquatic and see if it is interested.
The Memphis Zoo has a very healthy colony of these snakes.
Glades does occasionally get them in. Strickly Reptile is another possible source.

of tentacled snakes, but has anyone kept a Javan filesnake? I saw a classified for it about 10 months ago, a six footer in a massive aquarium. I can imagine a huge aquatic snake would need a huge aquarium...I don't know though, I'm not much into maintaining aquariums, that's why I don't keep fish, so I don't think filesnakes or tentacled snakes are for me...
