Florida water snake ID help

haddachoose1 Apr 06, 2004 02:48 PM

I'm helping a friend ID this water snake he photographed near Venice, FL. It was scanned from a very nice color print. The scanning process is a little disappointing. Sorry, no belly shot. I was stuck here in Wisconsin when this was taken.

My thought on this is Florida banded water snake (N. fasciata pictiventis), but I am by no means an expert on Florida water snakes. Any help will be appreciated.

I'd agree with that. There are as many looks to them as just about any other snake in FL.

Yeah, water snakes are tough. There's so much overlap in range and if they're dark with obscure pattern, they all pretty much look the same. I told my friend to make sure he gets a belly shot next time -lol. He thought it was a cottonmouth, so fat chance on that. Thanks again.
