Humidity Issues

numbsun Apr 06, 2004 03:52 PM

Can someone please inform me as to how to get the humidity over 90% with consistancy? My tank is as follows: 40 gallon Breeder, glass top, 3 inches of pea gravel terraformed with stream and filled with water, 1 inch green moss on top, 11 potted plants (2 of which are bromeliads), 6 stalks of bamboo, and 3 sections of corkbark. I'm thinking of adding cuttings of pothos to get the humidity up, but I've heard that adding a 50/50 mix of pure potting soil (no checmicals, vermiculite, etc) and Sphagnum moss to the top, into which the pots are sunk might help to retain moisture. Would live pillow moss or something be helpful? Any advice you could give would be appreciated. Even with my fogger on, it stays at about 72%, which is the same as with it off. I mist the tank 2X daily, and still it won't ever top 75%. What more should I be doing?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

First what kinda proe are you using to measure the humidity? Digital or analog? If you are using analog, get rid of it and buy a digital for about $15. My analog never went above 75% when in reality it was high 90s.

Its not hard to get the humidity steady once the tank is established. Are you even getting water collecting on the side of the glass? The set up sounds just fine. but i dont want to guess any more till i find out about the answers to the questions i asked.

I am using an analog. I picked up a new analog last night and it is reading mid 80s on average. I'd like to get it up about 10% more. I'll pick up a digital probe, but what else can I do to get mid 90s? I do have water on the inside of the glass all the time if that helps.

Thanks

Just completly ditch the anolog and get a digital. they run about $15 at wal-mart. Id bet a buffalo nickle the new anolog hygrometer is also off. They just arent made to read humidity levels that high. Well all of the analogs I have seen.

If you have water condensation on the glass (on the inside of the tank of course) thats a good sign you have high humidity. But pick up a digital and see what the readings are.

Good luck!
