See im cleaning my drift wood then all a sudden...

rc_racer_007 Jun 13, 2003 11:45 AM

bad title

ok im cleaning my driftwood in a 1 part bleach 8 part water solution. i checked on it after two hours and it turned white. (of course but i forgot cleach did that) and the wood has a slimmy film on it, im assuming from the bleach/water solution. whats the best way to get that off?

im thinking, run water over it, scrub with tooth brush, spray with water house, tooth bruch it again. Let is set in water for a few hours. depending on how much slim might be left, repeat.

sound good?

the more soaking the better... wash off what you can then soak overnight at least a couple of times and you should be fine

I soaked mine in bleach water for 8 hours, then in water for a total of 24 hours (3 cycles). And it's sun drying now.

You could put a little white vinegar in with the water rinse, maybe 1/2 cup to a gallon of water or even less. That will help neutralize the clorox and won't hurt anything. When the wood is dry and odorless it will be safe. Sun-drying, as someone already mentioned, hastens the process.

I like to preserve wood color, or enhance it-- So for a future trial, if you're working with a nice branch of manzanita or some other hard, colorful wood you don't want to bleach, you might try my method. I rub it all over with sesame seed oil-- the heavy kind used for flavoring Oriental dishes, then bake it at 180 degrees (warm zone) in an oven for a few hours- or over night. Polish the surface with paper towels to remove any surface oil that hasn't penetrated. It's safe and pretty as well as more resistant to humid conditions.

Hi,
Not saying that using bleach isn't a good thing all I have done in the past is rinse my cork bark, ghostwood and cypress off with RO water and put them into the tanks.I haven't had any adverse problems so far.I have e-mailed some people that have been in this hobby alot longer then I and they have done it the same way also. You can get too worked up about some freaky things growing in your tanks sometimes but they come and go alot of the time I have noticed. My imitators tank had some white fungus growing in places and I was tempted to tear it down but I saw my male with a tad on his back and thought if it's good enough for them to breed then it's good enough for me.There's my 2 cents worth.......Mark W.

i was thinking if i should clean it or not. i decided to bleach it. i only bleached both end for two hours each (my 5 gallon bucket wouldnt completly submerge the wood in the water/bleach solution). now im let it soak in water all night and ill sun dry it tommarow. Only bad thing about the bleach, besides the smell, is it makes it look white. but after a while it might turn to a dark color or become moss covered (hopefully).

thanks for the help everyone.

If I were you, I would not use this piece of wood in your dart frog cage. Regardless of how well you rinse the piece of wood off, there is a chance bleach will leech from the log.
