Maryland confusing law's..

reticbite Apr 06, 2004 07:27 PM

The maryland DNR website states that there is no permit needed to keep exotic venomous reptiles but there is no where to buy them in Md. I called Dnr and asked about this and I get no clear answer. Some dnr people say it is legal to keep but not sell, other's say it is not legal to have any venomous except 4 wild caught copperheads any where in Md. Does anyone have a clear and definate answer on the legalities of keeping exotic venomous reptiles in the state of MD?

I believe there's a dangerious animal regulation in MD that bans venomous, but I don't know from which department it orginates. I DO know that one cannot sell venomous in MD, and I'm fairly certain that it is illegal to own except for copperheads. Also check your county/city codes - some counties specifically outlaw venomous, such as Montgomery County.

You might want to call the Wildlife and Heritage department at DNR and ask for Glenn Therres or Scott Smith.

There prob. are city & county ordinances that may ban "Dangerous Animals" depending on the location. I have a friend that lives in MD that keeps HOTS & has never had a problem. He has permits for native animals & has stuff shipped in & out all the time. He was told there is no MD state-wide ban on HOTS. They don't make it easy to figure out though....
