Coccidia Questions

Iblis Apr 06, 2004 08:27 PM

Have some questions about this.

1) Does Novasan kill it?

2) Is it safe to clean items in a dishwasher that may be infested? Will the dishwasher kill the parasites?

3) Is it possible to treat without Albon? Can a combination of cleanliness, warmth and a supplement of natural intestinal flora control and/or defeat it?

4) If I wash my hands with an anti-bacterial soap between handling, is that sufficient to prevent passing along the infestation to other animals?

5) Can this parasite infect and/or harm humans?

Finally, is there a pictoral guide to visually inspecting snake feces? What is normal, what isn't, etc.

Thanks,

I never dealt with it in regards to Reptiles and the like, but I had a run through my kennel(s) and it was wiping out litters of pups by 4 weeks.
Just like Parvo this stuff CAN & DID mutate and came ripping though again.
Albon was the cure, along with somewhere around 200 gal. of Bleach through the 1.5 years struggle.7 litters of pups later it was finally gone.
Its a tuff mother to get a hold of once its started,I would see a Vet to determain what EXACTLY/Strain your dealing with before trying to treat it. Mutations cant be taken likely as it will only make them stronger and more resistant to treatment(s).

Best Of Luck !

All your questions can and should be answered when you take a fecal sample to the vet. That is if your serious about getting rid of it with minimal risk to your collection.

Already had a fecal done. Came back negative. Problems persisted. I did some research. Called the vet back and asked about coccidia. They didn't and can't check for it.

Now that I know what to ask for I've found a vet who can do the test and will have a sample tested next week. In the meantime I'm taking what measures I can.

It's nice when helpful people with more experience than I are willing to share.
