curious about sugar gliders...

lele Apr 06, 2004 10:28 PM

I know this isn't the sugar glider forum but there seems to be a
definite connection b/t them and herps and I am just curious about this. It seems that a lot of herp keepers also keep sugar gliders...what's the scoop???

just being curious,

I think they're cool little creatures, and was thinking about picking up a few. I don't know much about them, but I read that their gestation is only like 2 weeks, then they go in the pouch for a few months..... They're really interesting to me. John_Smith has some, maybe he'll chime in.

it just seems that this is one mammal that folks keep (other than cats and dogs) who also keep herps so I was just curious
Though I see that you have ferrets, too.

I lost Rose, my pinktoe, to a bad molt Oct 31st She had molted twice before quite successfully (I still have one intact). I miss her I have been thinking of getting another but this time I may make it an A. versicolor otherwise it may remind me too much of my lost Rose.

Have you kept T's before? The Avic's are very docile but VERY quick so be prepared if you handle them! I rarely took Rose out b/c in this big old house there are way too many places she could have gotten to. My cats were entralled with her and could watch her for a long time when she was active. Have fun with them!

I also have a breeding trio of sugar gliders. They are very interesting creatures but I do not suggest keeping them in or near your bedroom seeing as you will not get any sleep. They tend to bark at night and it sounds similar to a tiny dogs barking and boy can that sound travel. Generally they are easy to care for as long as you feed them a proper diet being a high protein low fat high calcium low phosphorus diet. There are many sites out there that have instructions on how to make your own mixtures with a blender to supplement thier fruits veggies and insect diet. Also there are other sites out there that manufacture specific diets for the gliders they say you dont have to feed them the fruits or veggies anymore but I have found that they still will eat what they need in the specific diet and then enjoy thier fruits and veggies still. One manufactured pellet I have used for my sugar gliders with great success can be found at www.brisky.com. The pellet may seem expensive but when you consider the small amount that your gliders will consume each night it really pans out. If any one has any further questions for me on sugar gliders feel free to contact me at my e-mail address Chameleo19@hotmail.com.

I don't think I'll be getting any soon as I think my cats would go nuts! The sleep thing is an issue, my place isn't that big and even though I'm in the country the neighbors might complain LOL!

Thanks for the info!

i keep mine nest to my bed and the noise is not an issue. they are very quite, but once in a while they make some noise but it is ok. as for my pinktoe's, i just took them back to the pet store tosay. some of my animals or reps stay at my work(preschool) and i teach the kids about them but my bose didn't like the idea of keeping tarantulas or a scorpion in the science center so i had to get rid of them. sucks

I have a friend with one. I dont see her much anymore so i dont know how its doing now but she would say that it made sounds like a chainsaw all night. She also had a very high cage for it, practically like a movable closet.

I had one for a few years(knocked his water bottle over while I was away, and he dehydrated...poor thing, loved my little furball).

They might look like the cutest thing in the world--that's because they ARE the cutest things in the world--but they can be very predaceous. Mammals seem to be much more aggrssvie than reptiles, and gliders are no different. I used to let him run around my room, while I was there.

One time, he ran up the cage my veild was in, and reached for him through the wires. He was trying to eat my veild, which was about his size! He grabbed his tail through the cage, I had to pull him off--viscious little sucker.

I've known many instances where they had escaped--which they do, cause they're really smart and nimble handed. The worst was in a pet store. The owner opened up the next day, and the middle was chewed out of every baby veild they had--over a dozen of them. Another instance, a glider got out and killed a full grown rat, and ate it(not all of it, of course). Numerous incidents of them getting out, breaking into cages of other animals, and EATING THEM!

they are, however, the absolute best little creature to have, them and prarie dogs.
