Incredibly smart beardie-you have these or similar experiences?

jadefox Apr 07, 2004 12:24 AM

When I talk to her, my beardie tries to imitate me talking by licking her lips, or barely opening her mouth while turning an incredible iridescent bright orange color and yellow on top of her head. (bright all over).

When I fall asleep she can literally tell--she does not move a single muscle until I wake up then commences with her lizard games (jumping all over me, wanting attention, etc).

She only eats when I talk to her like a baby (otherwise she won't eat), and when I lick my lips and go mmmm yum yum she starts licking her lips. and eats enthusiastically (after I remove the cricket legs-she hates cricket legs). If I accidently forget to feed her, she will remind me by looking at me and lick her lips. and she also learned to water her eyes. I don't know where she picked that up. Because I don't cry much. But she likes to watch television too. maybe from tv..

She is toilet trained...

Gawd it's uncanny....is it normal for these lizards to be so darn smart???? I can list more things she does but it would be too long on here!

well my kid will lift her tail when she goes and will seem to be very carfull to "get clear" of the mess.

as for licking thats how they "smell" so I bet your visual cue tells your bd to "check for food"

I think the air sampling when hungry is normnal for all reptiles for that reason.... watch a show on animal planet with Komodo dragons for example.... they will find food by scent from a long way off...

bd's do seem to have some level of "Visual communication" I read of a person mimicing some things to wild bd's in au and getting the responce behaviors he expected...

for all lizards a "Head bob" is a "I am big and strong, bow to me!" kind of thing and with bd's an arm wave is a "I don't want to fight, let's be nice" kind of thing....
try using your thumb to do a small "o" when a bd is watching and see what happens....

I do think they are *very* smart and have personality that goes beyond the size of the brain

I know they lick to taste, but she does it repeatedly until I feed her, or when I'm talking to her. Not just a taste.

She really has a super personality!

She doesn't do head bobbing at all. She knows she's the Royal Majesty and is queen of the roost No arm waving either. Except a modified one that she kind of points her hand toward her back and just keeps it there. She won't make her beard black either. Sometimes it's dingy grey, but when she's happy it is absolutely brilliant orange. it only gets that bright when i hold and talk to her
