my dogs were barking out the frount window so i went to see what it was for and there was a painted turt going down my drive way.. My location is that i live a bout 100 feet from a lake in north carolina. the funny tyhing is that the turt was walking away from the lake. This is a female i can tell from the claws beging short. The turtle is 6 inches long and 3.5 wide. (the measures were done in a sright line not over the curve of the sheel.) So i see a post about a female laying eggs could this turtle be laying eggs? If so what do i do i need a post today because i leave on friday.
thanx

Just leave her be and she'll be fine.

Just let her alone and she'll pick her spot, do the nesting, and head back to water all on her own. If you want to help the next, make a chicken wire cage and stake it down over the area for a month, then remove it. Most nests are eaten by skunks, etc, within the first few days, so by a month the scents will be gone and the turtles safe to hatch and wander on their own at about 60 - 80 days.
