General Question- Do you have male igs, or female igs?

girlzilla Jun 13, 2003 12:44 PM

I just want to see who has what, after reading posts below about Beanie the ig, and Kate's reply about most of us having males. I think it's true!

If there are more males, why do you think this is? Do more of them survive shipment? Are they more popular because of how they look, so farms ship more males??? Are they just generally more hardy?

Obviously male in my case. I didn't mean to imply that most of us have only males, though. Just that many of us have just one ig, and many of those only-igs are boys. But I thought that most of us probably did not have much advice about a female laying eggs so soon after MBD, because most of us have not dealt with that particular situation.

Plus, a lot of people here are new to the forums. It's definitely a totally different crowd than even just a few months ago. Not all of the new members are new to iguanas, I know, but many of them are. Anyway, with so many new members, I certainly don't profess to know if we have a majority of males or females.

We have two males and one female. I'm not sure why there would be more males maybe they are the "hardier" of the species? I have in the past owned a female veiled chameleon and a female pygmy leaf chameleon. We have a very good vet who cares mainly for reptiles and other exotics. Both the chameleons became eggbound! We did everything the books we had told us and everything the vet told us but nothing helped. She would not operate on the tiny pygmy leaf and she tried to remove the eggs on the veiled. It seemed to be successful but she died soon after. We have had male geckos, anoles and pygmy leaf (and still do) and haven't had any real problems with any of them or with any of our iguanas. We do have a female bearded that does great though!

I have 1 male and 3 females...I do NOT breed them...the 3 girls are in one room and the male is in the other...so they do not even see each other...all are adoptees or rescues...no pet store igs here...Lyn

1 female, 1 male. Both rescues.

The female from a private residence, male from the local spca.

1 male, Zephyr
maybe more people get rid of igs(and more male igs become rescued, and more rescuers post here..?) because males go into season and arent 'tame' or 'nice' anymore? i dunno
