Confused about behavior

bluefirefly Apr 07, 2004 10:45 AM

I have two dragons, an almost 3 year old male and an almost 1 year old female. Recently my female has been getting a black beard and bobbing his head at the male and the male has been waving to her. (They are in seperate cages, about 4 ft away from each other, but they can still see each other.) I thought it was supposed to be the other way around!

Anyone have any ideas about what they are thinking?

Are you 100% sure they are the sexes you think they are? Is it possible they are both male? Or you have the sexes reversed?

I know my 3 yr old is definetly a male, I had the vet check for me. I'm not perfectly sure about the female. When she started to get the black beard I questioned if she was a male or not, but I still think she is a she.

I've got a female like that. She physically is female, but shows all the behavior of a male. I call her my lesbian lizard LOL. When she was old enough to breed I kept introducing her to males and she would dominate and kick their buts and wouldn't breed. I really started to question if she really was a she, but then she through a clutch of duds so I know for sure. She still won't breed for me though.

I agree with Lisa, re-check the sexes. At that age it should be real easy to tell. Lift the tail about and look just above the vent towards the end of the tail. 2 bumps with a divit in the midle and it's a male, 1 bump in the midle or flat and it's a female (this usually works, some get confusing 3 bumps, 1 very large bump etc.) If you have a digital, grab some picks of the area and post them and I'll give you my best guess.
