Awesome!

Were those guys from carlyle or were you in central illinois near champaign? Just curious bout which county, please dont give any more locality data than that! I have been searching up here in NE illinois for two years. I am currently working with the us fish and wildlife to confirm a population here in dupage county.

Hope to see some snakes out as well. Love those mass! Several years ago, there was a decent pop. of massasauga in Monticello. I believe there are some still there. A student did eye witness a babie sitting on a trap there a few years ago.

I'm going to wait another month before I go down to Shawnee. I'd go every week if I could. Can't wait to hit La Rue. That population near Monticello has got to be so small it's probably doomed anyway.

I'm in Chicago , you don't have to tell me the locality, but how far away from Chicago? I havn't been able to find a good spot or really any spot that had much more than leopard frogs in or around Chicago. Of course I don't have a whole lot of time to explore spots. Any help would be cool.

MartinWhalin1 Apr 07, 2004 11:25 PM

This was several hours south of Chicago. I'm not too familiar with your area of the state. I know I am going up to Iriqouis and Kankakee Ctys. next month to look for bullsnakes. The best herping in Illinois is of course Shawnee. If you hit the snake road at the right time you've got to be blind to not find a dozen species.
