Hi all, has anyone heard that you can feed you ball too much? My male pastel would be happy if he could eat a rat every day. Will this kill my snake or lead to health problems? Anyone know?
Thanks,
Jason

A fat snake is a unhealthy snake?
yup.
You haven't been feeding it every day have you?
how often are you feeding it?

I feed him every three days. He is about 500 grams and likes to eat medium sized rat pups.
Wow. That stinks you must never get to handle him.

Nope, handle him all the time.
How long do you wait until you handle him?

It all depends on how old the snake is. Young snakes that are given a proper thermal gradient will rarely get fat, but will simply grow faster. Adults fed every day will likely get fat, but again that may depend on many things. Ball pythons will generally stop eating when they are "full". They will also stop eating during breeding season, so it may be fine to feed a female all she will eat when she is eating, especially if she is maternally incubating eggs or something. There is no straight answer and the best thing you can do is watch your snake for any problems should you decide to feed him every day. Chances are he wouldn't eat every day anyways.

That makes good sense. Thanks.
Jason
Sure, he'll eat a rat every day... for a few days, then he'll most definately stop. If he's still got some length to put on him, I say feed him what he wants. Cut him off if he starts getting too chunky.
That is what I think too. He is pretty young, 03 baby and loves to eat. Never refused a meal and growing fast.
Thanks
Why cant snakes be excused like humans ? Fat is Fat period !
Nothing wrong with a well fed chunky snake. Anyone have data etc on what length, weight, age percentages/limits ?
