Rack Help.....

lilroach56 Apr 07, 2004 01:57 PM

I am going to be building a Rack This spring/summer. It will be a rack for all my herps. In it will be a BP, leopard gecko, and crested Gecko. I plan to make it out of melamine as it is so much cheaper than everything else around where i live. The thing is i am worried about insulation. My room gets into the low 60's in the late fall, winter, and early spring. Would i need to put an insulative layer of something around it or will the melamine insulate it enough in the winter? also what do you recomend heating wise, back heat or belly heat?

I just finished building my melamine rack. I have bps, sinaloan milks & some leopard geckos housed in some rubbermaids. The dims of the rack are 4'h x 3'w x 16" d. It has 6 total shelves (counting the top) and holds 15 tubs (I forget the size ...16 qt??) and a 3' neodesha cage on top. It cost aroud $60 for ALL the melamine & screws. You can put 1/2" styro on the back & really on each shelf if you needed extra insulation. Are you using heat tape? My herp room is about 74 - 78 degrees F year round so I don't really worry about extra insulation with the heat tape in my situation. Try Lowes or home depot...shelving & storage is where I bought the shelves. I didn't have to have anything cut, just measured, predrilled & screwed it all together. I probably could have bought a sheet of melamine cheaper. But I don't like dealing with all the cutting & finishing that would need to be done. Oh, I got the 3/4" shelving & it is heavy as ...!
